Buck Godwin 1981Olds College Instructor in Horticulture
Passed away October 23,
2008 at the age of 79 years
In the last couple of weeks we received notice that B.J. "Buck" Godwin had passed away. Buck was an instructor at Olds College in Olds Alberta for many years and it was my privilege to meet him and his wife Nola and to have him as an instructor for several classes. Plant identification was the best as it was a class spent out on the grounds of the college and in some Olds neighbourhood gardens getting to know and recognize plants personally. I think one of his favourite sayings was "It's a good day!" And he was quite sincere about whatever circumstance might have brought this comment from him. We know that his family will miss him very much and we know also that he will be missed in plant circles wherever he touched down to share his knowledge and enthusiasm about plants.
His "retirement" was to buy an acreage and begin a dry plant material business to supply the florist trade. Several times when we stopped by to say hello, we were able to walk through the processing building and enjoy many smells and colors as there were rows and rows of plants, some dyed, some not, hanging to dry. And the conversation over tea and crumpets on the deck was a connecting point for and about common contacts in the horticulture world. Though our conversations were few in these later years, I will personally miss him and I am sure he will be missed in his community as well. Being missed in his family goes without saying! He was a husband, father and grandfather who we observed loved his family and treasured every moment with them.

While he was teaching long before my time, I heard about his passing from an elderly gardener (Barb Blythe) up here in La Ronge. I believe she got a position as head librarian out at Olds, way back when.
So I started late into plant education - where does that put me! Ha! Not quite as old as Buck but ....
Buck had a great career as a teacher and all around plants person. He was always interested in what was going on in the life of his students and sure did well to remember many of them, and would recall if given a hint! He and Nola really seemed to appreciate if you took time to stop and at least say hello. We were there in the the 79-81 semesters.
