Last Friday and Saturday were Haskap Days at the University of Saskatchewan

I was able to take in the Friday events at Haskap Days at the U of S Hort Field Lab and it was well worth the time. They are expanding their plantings each year and adding more crosses which they are planning to continue. Some of the more interesting materials were the wild collected plants particularly from Saskatchewan! Strong sturdy plants with a vase shape seemed to be the predominant type. The fruit was quite tasty.

Here are a few pictures:

The mechanical harvester. This unit will serve them better in the future when the plants are taller.

Checking out the berries and waiting for the harvester to make it's run down the row.

Dr. Bob Bors talking about the breeding and this particular lot of plants.

Some samples of Haskap spread.

Harvesting the berries using two poly swimming pools and sweeping th bush side to side eo the berries fall into the pools.

So, do you find them delicious? Haskups are one of my current obsessions - I really want some for the farm!

Hi Norah

They are a good berry to eat fresh from the bush. I do not find I can handle very many as they are quite rich and the anthocyanins make for a strong flavour. This can be true if one is a little hasty since they turn blue early but are not ripe for at least 10 days.

We got enough for our own use this year but last year were able to sell about 90 lbs.
